Big Hearts Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc.- July Update
Cleo Gets Her Surgery!!!

Thanks to the many donations and support, Cleo completed her surgery to remove the tumors in her ear. For those of you that do not know, here is a quick recap. Cleo was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma of the ear. It is not common in cats and is an aggressive cancer. A wonderful company volunteered the use of their CT Scan (wishes to remain anonymous) so we could see if the tumors would be able to be removed. Florida Veterinary Specialist's Oncologist, Dr. Curtis Kane, gave us a complimentary reading and consultation of those pictures, and stated we were a go for surgery. Cleo would need a Total Ear Ablasion. Simply put, we had to remove her ear canal. New Tampa Animal Hospital, Dr. Ricci, completed the surgery, donating much of the cost herself, and successfully removed approximately 30 tumors from Cleo's ear. Cleo is still in recovery but is doing fantastic and finally her ear and sinus infections are clearing now that the tumors are removed. Cleo is not available for adoption, instead she is a lifelong foster and her foster parents, Barbara and Ron, love her to pieces, and will make her part of their family until she decides to leave this earth. This way Big Hearts Rescue can take care of the expenses and make sure she is cared for promptly. The downside to Adenocarcinoma is that it will eventually return. We will not put Cleo through surgery again, but instead keep her comfortable until she decides she is ready. By doing this surgery we have given her a good quality of life and hopefully a long one. We are so thankful to Debbie, our adoption coordinator, who found her homeless at a flea market, as we would never had known that she was in need of help. If you would like to continue to help support her in her recheck visits, food, supplements, and other expenditures, please go to our website and make a donation. Thank you again for all of your support, and we will keep you updated on her progress. Please visit our site to donate

Pet of the Month
Jake is our Pet of the Month! He is a very sweet boy in need of a forever home. He was found as a stray that was dumped at a farm. We trapped him and originally thought he was gray and white (he was so dirty). He is a very sweet and loving boy, and a big boy at that! But it is just more to hug-- and he does give the best hugs! He also loves belly rubs. Jakey is the "man's man" of cats and he has the heart and personality to match his size and then some. His favorite friend is Aretha, who is looking for her forever home, too! His adoption fee includes his neuter, microchip, up to date on vaccines, disease testing, and free of fleas and parasites. If you are interested in adopting Jake please contact us at 352-567-9736 or

Duncan Needs a New Lifelong Foster!

Duncan needs a new Lifelong Foster! Duncan was brought into Big Hearts Rescue two years ago when he was approximately 15 years old. He was found running loose and very thin. He had growths all over his body, all being fatty tumors or warts, but the one on his lip turned out to be malignant (cancerous). We removed it and within two months it had come back. We made the decision to remove part of his lower lip (where the tumor was) to get rid of it for good. Duncan had a seizure once and we did not feel he was a good candidate for adoption. Duncan had a fantastic Foster home but can no longer spend the time he needs. Duncan is now 17 years old and still kicking! He has arthritis and a heart murmur (which he takes medication for). He is extremely sweet and quiet and is looking for a new home to spent the rest of his days. After two years he is still cancer free!!! Big Hearts Rescue promises to make sure Duncan has a great rest of his life, and that it is a quality life. If you would like to be Duncan's Life Long Foster and Friend please contact us at 352-567-9736 or
bhrescue@gmail.com All of his expenses will be paid for by the rescue. That is everything from food and supplies to full medical and everything in between.
Financial Strains
We all are being hit hard with the economy, personally, through our occupations, and also through charitable organizations. Animal rescues are seeing more animals being surrendered and less donations which in turn is making adoptions slower. People are now turning their animals loose, having domesticated pets fend for themselves out in the wild. Ocala State Park now has over a hundred horses running loose as owners are just dumping them. These are not wild horses! Big Hearts Rescue is struggling with the economy as our donations are at an all-time low. We need help to keep food, supplies, and medical care to our rescues, and the ability to help rescue other animals in need. Amber (pictured) is just one of those stories. She was found running loose, emaciated, heartworm positive, and scared to death! Amber is now healthy, no longer hungry, and we now are looking for a forever home for her. These animals don't understand what is happening and need help desperately. Please help us by making a donation to our rescue. Even if a small amount is all you can afford, it will help. You can make a donation directly through our
website or mail one to our address at: Big Hearts Rescue, PO Box 20723, Tampa, FL, 33622-0723. Thank you again and please pass this along to others. Help us help the animals!
